2022 Honda Ridgeline vs. 2022 Ford Ranger Comparison

4 min read

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is a unibody 4-door pickup truck, while the 2022 Ford Ranger is of the traditional body-on-frame variety. Both are established midsize pickup trucks. Here’s how they compare.

2022 Honda Ridgeline

2022 Honda Ridgeline starting price: $37,640 | Price yours or View listings near you.

Above Average: Standard V6 and all-wheel drive; excellent build quality and resale value; under-bed storage; clever dual-action tailgate.

Below Average: Not a traditional body-on-frame design; others tow more; off-road chops may suffer by comparison; fuel economy.

Consensus: Honda’s pickup truck is a highly capable vehicle with everything the occasional truck user should require. Seating for five? Check. Pickup bed in back? Check. Standard all-wheel drive? Check. And since it shares the same platform as the Honda Pilot SUV, it has compliant ride manners.

2022 Ford Ranger

2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew starting price: $25,285 | Price yours or View listings near you.

Above Average: Best-in-class payload; 7,500-pound tow rating; good fuel economy; off-road capability.

Below Average: Offers just one engine and transmission choice; limited in-cab storage; somewhat stiff ride.

Consensus: In addition to the great tow rating and best-in-class payload capacity, the Ranger features high-tech infotainment and safety features. New for 2022, the throwback Splash cosmetic trim package appears.

Ridgeline vs. Ranger: Comfort vs. Capability

2022 Ridgeline

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline returns largely unchanged following a toughening up for the 2021 model year. It’s still the spacious midsize 4-door pickup with seating for five. Unlike most others in the segment, the Ridgeline is a unibody truck that offers a more comfortable ride than those built using traditional body-on-frame construction. The Ridgeline’s SUV underpinnings have been strengthened for truck duty.

There’s only one powertrain, but it is a good one. Honda’s proven 3.5-liter V6 engine moves many vehicles within the brand and, in this case, delivers 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. It’s matched to a 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shift levers and all-wheel drive (AWD). Torque vectoring is a notable feature in this AWD system that can send up to 70% of power to the Ridgeline’s rear wheels for added stability and composure both on road and off.

This AWD powertrain benefits from a multi-mode terrain response feature that aids its footing on slippery, wet surfaces. The Ridgeline can tow up to 5,000 pounds, enough for pulling a small boat, a pair of motorcycles, or even a couple of personal watercraft. The pickup bed has a maximum payload of 1,583 pounds. It also includes an underfloor storage area with a drain plug, making it the perfect place to keep ice-cold drinks during a tailgate party.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is available in four trim levels. The base is the Ridgeline Sport, followed by Ridgeline RTL, Ridgeline RTL-E, and topline Ridgeline Black Edition.

2022 Ford Ranger

The 2022 Ford Ranger is a highly adaptable truck that makes everyone forget the previous Ranger. The turbocharged 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder engine makes 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission and moves with authority. Four-wheel drive is available for $4,000+, depending on trim level.

The 2022 Ranger offers a choice of SuperCrew or SuperCab options with two different bed lengths. If you haul passengers regularly, we recommend the SuperCrew over the tight-fitting SuperCab.

The innovative Tow-Optimized Blind Spot Monitoring system extends its vision to include whatever is being towed behind the truck, and the Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker audio system are two of our favorite options. The Co-Pilot360 safety suite is optional on the XL and standard on XLT and Lariat trim levels.

A new Ranger Splash option is also available with exclusive orange and black side graphics and black 18-inch wheels. Inside there is orange accent stitching on the steering wheel, shifter knob, and parking brake boot to help you put some color in your life.

Which One is Right for Me?
