Leaders with Truliant Federal Credit Union said they will pay for the remaining application fees for a customized Pilot Mountain license plate that would provide funding for the state park as fire crews work to contain the wildfire on Pilot Mountain.

The customized license plate was initiated by the Friends of Sauratown Mountain (Friends), officials said.

The organization has been working on the idea throughout the year.

Officials said the customized Pilot Mountain license plate would provide additional funding for Pilot Mountain State Park.

If approved, the first set of plates could be issued by June 2022.

As of December, officials said Friends still needs around 70 applications to reach the required 300 applications to submit the customized Pilot Mountain license plate application.

The signatures must be returned to individual state house representatives by Dec. 31, they added, in order for the application to be considered in 2022 by the North Carolina legislature.

Before parts of Pilot Mountain caught fire, leaders with Friends said the customized plates can help create about $6,000 for the park annually.

“This donation will have a tremendous impact on what we can do to help Pilot Mountain State Park,” said Debbie Vaden, president of the Friends of Sauratown Mountain. “The fact that Truliant is willing to pay the signature application fee for people in the area to have the new specialty license plate is a gift that will keep giving for many years to come.”
