How Techstars accelerator could make Knoxville-Oak Ridge a tech hub

9 min read

Two years ago, Stacey Patterson and some other University of Tennessee leaders had dinner on Market Square with Brad Feld, one of the founders of worldwide startup network Techstars.

Until that visit, said Patterson, the vice president for research, outreach and economic development at the University of Tennessee, Feld had no idea that Knoxville and Oak Ridge, two homes of innovation in East Tennessee, were neighbors.

He knew the reputations of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. But he’d never thought of them as being part of the same region.

The Knoxville-Oak Ridge corridor has some work to do before it becomes known as an innovation hub.
