2 min read

LIHU‘E — Polynesian Voyaging Society specialty license plates will be available for purchase at the County of Kaua‘i Finance Department Motor Vehicle Registration division.

John Kruse, one of the original members of the voyaging canoe Hokule‘a, received the first Kauai-issued PVS plate on Monday, according to the county.

“John helped in the construction of Hokule‘a and was a crew member on her maiden voyage to Tahiti in 1976,” the county reported. “He also fo-founded Na Kalai Wa‘a o Kaua‘i (The Canoe Builders of Kaua‘i) in 1996, along with Dennis Chun and the late Dr. Patric Aiu. The nonprofit began construction of Namahoe — Kaua‘i’s first traditional voyaging canoe — in the late 1990s, which was eventually launched from the waters of Nawiliwili in September 2016.”

In addition to Kruse’s, the Kaua‘i DMV issued 92 PVS plates during its first day of sales.

The specialty plates cost $36, of which $20 will be donated to PVS to support the organization.

The remaining costs include $10 toward the purchase of the plate, $1 for a new emblem and $5 for processing.

To purchase a PVS specialty plate:
